Similar Fibers, Very Different Feel

Modal, micromodal and bamboo are often positioned as modern alternatives to cotton. They share a common idea: producing a soft fiber from plant-based cellulose.

But in underwear, the differences become obvious fast.

Modal is made from wood pulp, typically beech. It's valued for its softness, drape and superior moisture management compared to cotton.

In underwear, it delivers a supple, cool-to-the-touch feel and holds its shape after washing far better than cotton does.

Micromodal

Micromodal is a finer-grade version of modal. Its thinner fibers create an even softer hand feel and a genuine second-skin sensation.

It's particularly well suited for premium men's underwear because it combines softness, breathability and a low profile under trousers.

Bamboo

Bamboo used in textiles is generally bamboo viscose. It can be very soft and pleasant, but quality varies wildly depending on the process, the yarn and the weave.

A good bamboo fabric can be comfortable. A cheap one can stretch out quickly or lack structure.

What to Actually Compare

  • Softness: micromodal first, then modal; bamboo varies
  • Shape retention: depends on the elastane blend
  • Breathability: strong for modal and micromodal; hit-or-miss for bamboo
  • Durability: depends on yarn quality and wash care
  • Transparency: check certifications and the exact composition

Why We Chose Micromodal

For AERIX, micromodal meets the core need: an incredibly soft hand feel, excellent moisture-wicking performance and a barely-there presence on the skin.

We pair it with construction engineered for ventilation — because fabric alone is never enough.
